Some information on scouting in
Bhutan (source DYS website)
Scouting program in
Bhutan existed since 1980s in the form of annual scout camp initiated by Bhutan
Youth Development Association (BYDA), an NGO. However, it could not take off since
BYDA could not make scouting popular among the youth and besides failed to
mobilize support.
In 1994, the Asia
Pacific Region (APR) provided some support towards establishing formal scouting
in Bhutan. In January 1996, Bhutan Scouts Association (BSA) was
established. In 1999, BSA became a full-fledged member of the World
Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) during the 35th World Scout
conference in Durban, South Africa.
There are 594 active
trained leaders and 20554 scout members registered with the Association (2012).
Scout program is
geared towards promoting citizenship education and self development through
attractive (joyful), meaningful and challenging activities focusing on the
value of sharing, community living, strengthening of brotherhood (sisterhood)
and making the youth understand their role in the nation building.
